"Chris Wyrick's first artistic impulse was toward forgery. Beginning with faithfully recreating his parents' signatures on his school work and developing into a pair of trompe l'oeil checkered Vans, Wyrick's approach to his artwork has always been an industrious balance between what he has (technical virtuosity; a thorough background in art history) and what he desires (to stay out of trouble; to checkerboard). Torn between the athlete and the artist, his work balances the physical and the cerebral as he moves between muscular, gestural painting and precise, masterful drawing."
